wow i wonder if im even related to them since my last name is buell
Caterina:
If you can trace your family origins back to the area of Hebron, Connecticut in the 1770s, you may be closely related to William Buell’s family.
Otherwise I believe all the Buells in North American are related and can trace themselves back to the “Mayflower” arrival.
This group also spelled their name “BEWELL” when they arrived in Canada.

Doug Grant
Thank you very much for the buell information I have traced my 3rd great grandmother Dorcus Buell born 1806 conn usa married Joseph Lamarsh and both died right in my community of Cottam near Kingsville Ont.
i have no idea where these two met as he was born near Quebec but I visit their graves and view there property less than 4miles on the same road as our home. i have traced her family back to William Buell one of the founders of Windsor,Hartford Conn.
I do not see that he was on the Mayflower though.
Thank you again for the pictures of Brockville founded by my 3rd cousin 6 x removed.
if you have anything more on my family I would love it.
Thank you Doug

As you may know Major John Richardson has been a long-time project for me. I was interested in his years in Brockville when he published the New Era there and so I looked up Buell who edited the competing paper and found your comments on Buell. Richardson published Jack Brag in Spain in his New Era but no copy has been found. Would not the Buell family have saved a copy? I started a Major John Richardson newsletter on my blog and welcome comments, esp on finds of his work. Possibly you can help. Yours, David Beasley
I am currently working on the Buell family. My 3rd great-grandmother was Rachel Buell (m. Anthony McCrady), dau. of Jonathan Buell and Hannah Smith. William Sr. and Jonathan were sons of Timothy Buell and Mercy Peters. Timothy’s mother was Hannah Bradford, the great-granddaughter of Gov. William Bradford of Plymouth and the Mayflower. The Buell family has quite a pedigree in Connecticut and going back to England.
Vast majority of those with surname Buell descend from the mysterious William Buell of Windsor, Connecticut. Boris Johnston is a descendant. Most Canadian Buells descend from Major Timothy Buell of Hebron, who’s son William Buell co founded Brockville Ontario, with Charles Jones, interestingly an ancestor of Camilla Parker Bowles. Despite close family relationships with The Family Compact such as the Jarvis’s they were Reformers. Many descendants went on to contribute to Canada particularly as politicians & military. Col. Buell led the North Shore Regiment on D Day, Sir William Buell Richards was the first Supreme Court Judge. Francis Richards reputedly drew a portrait of Oscar Wilde that inspired “The Picture of Dorian Grey”.
